Age Concern Wigan Borough

Within the Sure at Your Door Project we offer all persons 50 and over information and advice on how to to help prevent and deal with unwanted callers. A free Home Safety Check and free supply and installation of small security devices are also provided at the service user's request. On the visit the service user is provided with a bogus caller pack, which provides them with useful information regarding how to help prevent doorstep crime. The service is completely free of charge and is offered with no obligation. Presentations and events are carried out throughout the Borough to enable us to raise awareness of the crime and also educate people on how to help prevent it happening.

Since the project began in April 2006 we have received 1485 referrals and have installed approximately 10,000 security devices. The most in demand devices fitted are door bars of which we have fitted 1340, door chains - 212 and window alarms - 2,372. The project has been very successful and very well received and as a result a high percentage of our referrals are now generated via word of mouth and recommendation. The project is currently funded to April 2008.
